  4. Catesby, the ringleader, was probably fortunate in being 
  5. shot while resisting arrest: the surviving conspirators were 
  6. most likely subjected to cruel torture in the weeks 
  7. leading up to their trial.

  9. Whatever they suffered, the worst was yet to come. 
  10. Although all but one pleaded not guilty, the outcome was a 
  11. foregone conclusion. All the defendants were convicted and 
  12. sentenced to death. Guy Fawkes himself, with three companions, 
  13. was executed within sight of the House of Lords, in the barbarous medieval fashion reserved for traitors - hung, then disembowelled
  14. whilst still alive.
